Harvey Gallery Catalogue 2008


	1. Sun, Sail & Swirls Debbie IInspired by stained glass and a transparent theme explored during City & Guilds diploma. Made from rip-stop nylon, the motif is based on Fatsia japonica.

2. Crow Road Erica

IIn the style of a quilt by Nancy Crow, a much admired US quilt artist. Hand dyed and commercially printed fabrics, hand quilted.

4. It’s a Melon! Erica

My final quilt for City & Guilds, inspired by the many colours and patterns to be found in melons. Hand dyed cotton and silk, hand and machine quilting.

3. Crystal Therapy Anna

My City & Guilds table centre piece inspired by snowflakes. Machine pieced and quilted.

5. Fractal Cogs Chris

Inspired by vintage tractor wheels. Final quilt for my City & Guilds Diploma.

6. Canadian Goose Liz

Layered fabric, procion dyed recycled sheets, netting to hold pieces of fabric in place. Freehand machine quilted and embellished with metal.

7. Summer Bloomers Debbie

An original design inspired by my garden and made for the ‘Moonwalk’. Layers of organza, fabric and fibres machine stitched to soluble film. Leaves are polyshrinkable plastic flowers and are burnt with a soldering iron using Margaret Beale’s technique.

8 Pewter and Stitch Liz

Experiment with pewter appliquéd on fabric. Space dyed fabric.


	9. Five a Day Erica These are copies of actual fruit, the peel used as a pattern and then enlarged. The bowl features motifs from the shapes of the peel.

10. Doorway Erica

Inspired by a picture of a door set into a cave opening. Fabric paints and painted bondaweb.


	11. Earth, Fire and Water Anna Inspired by a photo taken of a Moroccan landscape. Panel one is machine pieced and hand stitched; panel two is cut-back leather and sheer fabric; and panel three is machine pieced and machine couched.

12. Venice Liz

Round robin quilt, I made the centre block and then passed it on, with fabrics, to colleagues. Made from recycled sheets procion dyed.

A City & Guilds sample of shibori and big stitch quilting.

15. Indigo and Pewter Liz

Design based on Portuguese Manuelino architecture worked on Geronimo’s Vault and other historic features such as rose windows from other churches. Indigo dyed fabrics with pewter embellishments. Final quilt for City & Guilds.

The seagull flies calmly over the chaos below. Hand appliqué and quilting.

Metal, Stitch & Beads was my first attempt to work with rusty metal. An experiment that I enjoyed and I intend to continue broadening my experience designing with metal..

	24. Hollie Dollie Debbie Created from a Wendy Briggs pattern at a class taught by Hazel Ryder. The body is calico painted with acrylic and varnish.

Started in a workshop with Edwina Mackinnon. A kaleidoscope quilt with an African feel and a contemporary edge. Machine pieced and hand quilted.

	29. Sew Fibonacci Erica A variety of commercially printed fabrics. Both the background and the appliqued circles are in fibonacci proportions. A grid was discharged using household bleach and a sponge print block.

31. Limestone Country I Mary

This is a diploma piece for City & Guilds. The design source comes from my visits to the Yorkshire Dales. I am fascinated by the flora which grows in the shelter of the grykes. I have experimented here with log cabin by curving the sides of a courthouse step block.

Flying geese, log cabin and four-patch squares in autumn colours. Machine pieced and long-arm quilted

34. Henry Moore at Kew Mary

I visit Kew every autumn with a quilter friend. We then set a challenge to be made before our next visit. This is inspired by the Henry Moore sculptures at Kew 2007-8. Heide Stoll-Weber fabrics capture the colours.

35. Paper Venice Mary

Constructed from tourist ephemera: bills, tickets, photos and wrapping paper. Machine pieced on to foundation of cilene and backed with hand-dyed batik.

36. Viva la Bacuela Mary

This was inspried by a visit to the Ethnobotanical Gardens at Oaxaca in Mexico. The Bacuela is an endangered species in Mexico. The quilt is constructed from curved foundation piecing and hand quilted.

An original design based on a technique taught by Ineke Berlyn. Painted conservation tissue, fabric and organza, the three layers are edged with machine embroidery and burnt back.

Group challenge to use netting fabric distributed by Debbie. I indigo dyed my piece then sewed it to wire mesh and moulded it around a pottery pot.

For the Loose Threads group challenge for 2008, each member made a quilt to represent one day of the week. The names of the days were allocated randomly and the design criteria dictated the size and shape of each piece. The name of the day had to be included. We bought fabrics in the seven colours of the rainbow and each member had a random three that had to be included.
